SINS AND PUNISHMENTS
CIRCLE 6: As Dante and virgil approach lower hell, they come to a large iron wall with a locked gate surrounding the city of dis. they get through the gate by sending for help and the gate is unlocked by an angel from heaven. once they get inside, they see the sinners. the sinners are Heratics. They believed that the soul dies with the body, so their punishment is to eternally be placed in in tombs scattered across the land with open lids. there are also flames everywhere to keep the tombs fiery hot to make the souls suffer from the heat.
CIRCLE 7: The next Circle they travel to is a larger area. circle 7 has 3 different rounds in it for the 3 Different kinds of violence able to be Committed.
ROUND 1: the first round is in an area with a steep landslide caused by the earthquake when christ descended into hell. the sinners here Committed acts of violence against neighbor. these people murdered, assaulted, robbed, and vandalized. they have to stand in a boiling river of blood known as the Phlegethon river. the sinners have to stand in a certain depth of the boiling blood of their victims depending on their violence, and are kept at their certain level by centaurs who shoot them with their bows.
ROUND 2: the second round of the 7th circle is for sinners who Committed acts of violence against self. these are the people who Committed acts of suicide or Profligacy. when dante and virgil get here they Don't see as many people, but they see a large forest of trees though. the trees they see are all dead looking. these trees are the people who Committed suicide. the body is considered a temple and these people didn't respect their "temple", so they are deprived of that form and turned into toxic, twisted, black trees and tormented by the harpies. the profligates were so wildly extravagant and reckless in life, so they are chased by ferocious black dogs that rip them apart. the sinners reform afterwards and it starts all over again.
ROUND 3: the third and final round of the 7th circle is for acts of violence against god, nature, and art. the terrain of this area is burning sands which is kept hot by the raining fire. The sinners have to suffer in different ways depending on their sins. the blasphemers have to lie on their backs and receive the most pain, the sodomers have to crouch with a money bag hanging from their neck to weigh them down, and the usurers have to roam forever without stopping.

CIRCLE 8: the 8th circle holds more sinners than any of the other circles of hell. it has 10 bolgias or ditches. this circle is for the sinners who Committed acts of fraud.
BOLGIA 1: the first Bolgia is for the sinners who were seducers or panders. these sinners are punished by being driven by devils with whips. these sinners have to keep walking through the ditch forever. since their sins in life was sexual seduction or pandering the devils take sexual pleasure in inflicting pain on the sinners by whipping the sinners if they stop.
BOLGIA 2: The 2nd bolgia of the 8th circle of hell is for the sinners who Committed sins of flattery. these sinners are considered to be "Full of it" in life since when they are flattering they are lying to others for their own personal gain. their punishment is to be sunk in their own excretion because in life the were "full of it" so now they are sunk in "it".
BOLGIA 3: The following Bolgia of the 8th circle is filled with round holes that look like the size and shape of baptismal font holes that priests would baptize from. this bolgia is reserved for simoniacs. these sinners sold the sacraments of holy offices to family members so they could become wealthier. their punishment is to suffer an inverted baptism. they are upside down showing their calves and feet out of the font holes and their feet are on fire.
BOLGIA 4: the 4th bolgia is the area where the sinners who were considered as sorcerers, soothsayers, prophets, or fortune-tellers are sent. the punishment they suffer is having their heads on backwards. in their lives they were always telling people what they "see" ahead of them, so they Aren't allowed to see in front of them anymore. they will only see what is behind them. the terrain of this bolgia is the ground of the ditch is wet with the sinners' tears.
BOLGIA 5: this next area of the 8th circle is seen by dante and virgil as a ditch filled with boiling tar. this bolgia is reserved for the barrators. in their lives they Committed sins of graft by profiting from their political offices. their punishment is to stay completely submerged underneath the boiling tar or else face being stabbed by the malabranche devils with their pitchforks..
BOLGIA 6: the 6th bolgia is different from any other circle or ditch in hell because the sinners were clothed instead of being naked. the sinners were all hypocrites, so their punishment is to wear guilded cloaks but the inside of their cloaks was lined with lead. this was to point out that they look trustful and superior on the outside, but are actually corrupt and vile on the inside. the terrain of this area is a large land with every land bridge broken over the 6th bolgia.
BOLGIA 7: The following bolgia is a barren land with no covers, and no places to hide. this is reserved for all of the thieves of the world. when dante and virgil looked into this ditch all they could see were endless amounts of snakes. they soon realized that these snakes were what used to be the sinners. the sinners in this bolgia are transformed into snakes because in their lives as thieves, they Couldn't distinguish the difference between what was theirs and what was another person's property. after undergoing these changes they will no longer be able to determine what is theirs and what is another's in terms of personal identity.
BOLGIA 8: The 8th bolgia is for the deceivers in life. during their lives, these people were false counselors who encouraged others to practice deceit and trickery. they suffer by being concealed in bright and brilliant flames. Each flame in this bolgia "steals" a sinner and are now inside of these flames. in their lives these people robbed other men of their integrity by persuading them to practice deceit. these flames in this bolgia are in an open area, and the flames look like fireflies in a valley in the summer at dusk.
BOLGIA 9: The next bolgia resembles a bloody battlefield. all of the sinners are in a line moving in a circle around the entire bolgia while a devil with a sword swings away. since they divided others in life, they are now sliced to Pieces. whatever is severed will grow back as they go around the ditch, and when they get to the devil it will have grown back but they will get sliced at again by the devil with the sword.
BOLGIA 10: The final Bolgia of the 8th circle of hell is for all of the falsifiers. It looks like packing every sick person from every large hospital together into one ditch with rotting flesh. the sinners are infested with hideous physical symptoms of a disease that mirrors their souls' disease because fraud is a spiritual disease. the alchemists suffer from leprosy which makes their skin all crusty and disgusting. the impersonators suffer from rabies by running around biting and dragging off their prey. the counterfeiters suffer from dropsy, a condition where all the fluids collects itself in the tissues of your body making your skin look droopy. and finally the liars and the Perjurers suffer from the "stinking fever". This is a severe fever, but it makes them stink in addition to the sickness.

CIRCLE 9: Before dante and virgil reach the icy region of the 9th circle, they come across some very tall objects that dante thinks to be towers in another city. what dante was seeing is actually giants chained up as they have tried to overthrow Their families but failed. every giant is chained up except for the son of Neptune and gaea, antaeus. He is the only giant not chained because he did not take part in the attack of olympus. this comes to dante and virgil's advantage because they cannot descend into the icy region of circle 9, so virgil asks the giant to help. the giant places them into his hand and puts them Down on the icy surface of the 9th circle of hell.
the final circle of the inferno is exactly opposite of an inferno. it is a frozen lake filled with sinners, cocytus. the reason for this ice is a symbol of the cold-blooded hatred that possessed these traitorous murders. there are 4 regions of this circle, and each are for a different severity of the sin of treachery. As Dante And Virgil Go Further Into The Circle, The Sinners Appear Deeper In The Ice. he four regions are Caina, antenora, Ptolomea, and judecca. Each region is named after a sinner who Committed the crime for the specified region. caina is named after the biblical figure, cain, who killed his brother abel. caina is the region for people who are traitors to their family. the next region is named After the trojan prince antenor who betrayed his country by plotting with the greeks to help destroy his own city of troy. this place is where traitors to country are placed. ptolomea is named after ptolomy, the captain of jericho, who murdered the roman general pompey as soon as he stepped ashore even though he was only there seeking refuge after a defeat. this is the place for the traitors of their guests to suffer. the last region of circle 9 is judecca who is named after judas, the traitor of christ. this is where the traitors of their lords or masters come to suffer.
